Every breakthrough has a surface. We fund what covers it.

Nutmeg Coating & Technology unites public institutions and private industry to make the East Coast the proving ground for next-generation coating science — funding the research, the people, and the partnerships that move surfaces forward.

Our mission

To make the East Coast the center of gravity for advanced coating technology — where public resources and private ambition combine to protect infrastructure, extend the life of everything we build, and put American surface science first.

Coatings are quiet technology. They decide whether a bridge lasts thirty years or a hundred, whether a hull resists the ocean, whether a factory floor survives the decade. Yet the science behind them is chronically underfunded and fragmented across labs, plants, and states that rarely talk to each other.

Nutmeg Coating & Technology exists to connect those dots. As a registered 501 C(3), we channel public and private support into applied research, award grants to member companies advancing the field, and build the partnerships that turn regional expertise into a national asset.

What we do

Three programs. One surface-obsessed mission.

Program 01

Innovation Grants

Periodic grants awarded to member companies pursuing high-impact coating R&D — new chemistries, application methods, durability science, and sustainable formulations that wouldn't otherwise reach the lab bench.

Program 02

Public–Private Partnerships

We broker collaborations between industry, universities, and government agencies — pairing real-world coating problems with the institutions and funding equipped to solve them.

Program 03

Regional Advancement

Workforce development, knowledge sharing, and advocacy that strengthen the East Coast's coating ecosystem — from Connecticut manufacturers to the ports, bridges, and industries they protect.

The science

Surfaces, up close.

Interactive 01

Anatomy of a modern coating system

A protective finish is a stack of engineered layers, each thinner than a human hair. Select a layer to see its job.

Interactive 02

The contact angle test

How do scientists measure a coating's water repellency? By the angle a droplet makes with the surface. Drag to change the surface chemistry.
